Hans,

Not sure how often you go to this forum but I do have a question regarding this article. You say:

"Tip: Don't use Superthrive on your pines; it is harmful to the micro-organisms in the soil that the pine needs to survive!"

How did you come to this conclusion? Are there any scientific facts to back this up?

I am asking because I use an all organic fertilization regimen. I am looking to colonize as many beneficial micro-organisms and fungi as I can. I do use a few drops of superthrive per gallon for regular watering. I use a higher dose for new re pots. If I am negating the whole purpose of using an all organic regimen (i.e. for beneficial micro-organisms and fungi) then that will be my deciding factor in not using superthrive anymore. I have been doing some research and I think a viable organic alternative to superthrive would be liquid seaweed.

By the way, excellent article. It really fills in the gaps and gives a better understanding than what was published in the "Pines" Stone Lantern book. In fact, I have printed it out and stuck in that book for reference.

Dear Hans,
Many thanks for an informative and thoughtful article.
As a beginner to Bonsai, this article is very valuable and a great source of important things to do.
I too have printed out a copy for future references.
A question I have is regarding potting. When repotting, is it better to repot in deeper bonsai pots, based upon the root structure and the need for micro-organisms?
